Phil and Linda Byler, missionaries in Sudan

Yesterday I began to chuckle as the AIM Air Caravan 12-seater airplane was descending into Nairobi airport. Linda and I were on our tenth small airplane ride, crossing international borders six times in the recent fourteen days. (Congo, Kenya, Sudan, Uganda)

I recalled the two of us being called forward in the congregation of Pine Street Mennonite Church in the 1980’s. The visiting prophet declared over us that he saw us getting on and off of many airplanes as we took the gospel to various countries of the world.

Some of us were a bit skeptical of those prophets.

Do I hear a divine chuckle?

Our newest little missionary, Adelaide Ramirez, was initiated into Didinga community culture today by a traditional “coming out” ceremony. Women wearing the festive hide skirts, multitudes of beads, and bells on their ankles escorted her and her mother in and out of the hut door four times as is the custom for a female. They sprinkled grain and water for prosperity and spit water for blessing on mother’s feet. The procession was led by a warrior with a spear for protection which was wielded fiercely against unseen foes.

Our four day visit in the Didinga hills of Sudan concluded with a powerful time of prayer around the napire, the family’s outside fire, where we had eaten our evening meal under the stars and bright half moon. Seven years of missionary battle has established a beachhead of faith in this animistic society. The battle for the light of the Glorious Gospel of Jesus against the deep darkness of Satan’s schemes which yields drunkenness, hatred, fear, promiscuity, and hiding from the communities retribution.
