CongoThis communion service was particularly touching and meaningful… even before it’s dramatic conclusion. My emotions were deeply stirred as I reflected on the passion of Christ on my behalf. I received the elements with deep and solemn  gratitude. Perhaps it was the more liturgical style than I’m used to that stirred my heart. Perhaps it was the ornate golden cups. Or maybe the worship songs accompanying the service. I sensed the whole assembly was with me in the deep appreciation for this worship experience that was concluding our week of AIM leadership meetings.

When everyone was seated and the elements returned to their proper place, our leader Lanny turned and asked, “Has everyone been served?”

“NO LANNY! There are 30,000 Laarim who have not been served.” And another voice, “No there are 1.2 million ….. who have not been served.” And yet another and another, “No there are ….. thousands of …… who have not been served.”

A new surge of emotions jolted me as the gripping reality of millions of unreached peoples jarred and disquieted my deeply settled intimacy with the Father.

Yup, that preacher is Phil’s kid brother Jonathan Byler. He was the keynote speaker for AIM’s biannual leadership workshop in Kenya. Our mother would have been proud of her boys the morning when Jon and Philip filled the podium with back to back presentations.

Jon’s clear and enthusiastic teaching style really shone in his best presentation, “Leading From or Toward’s Intimacy.” Are we secure in our intimate relationship with the Father, or are we striving to be good enough to earn His love? This topic set the tone for the week of meetings getting beyond the usual cerebral level to really touching the hearts of the almost 100 AIM leaders. In addition each participant received a free copy of Jon’s The Heart of Christian Leadership. Phil was quite proud of his “little” brother.
